REDISTRICTING 2001
Public Meetings:
7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 26
Room 101 Blatt Building
Columbia, SC
In SC there are areas that experienced explosive growth in the last 10 years...
Some that shrank..... Final Census data will be out in August... But
Preliminary results are in...
32,395 is the magic number +/- about 1% to 1.5%
SO that means.... 48,000 in Rep. Larry Koon in Lexington.... WAAAYYYY too
many. but up in union and some of the more desolate areas of
McCormick and greenwood counties there are population deflation rather than
growth.... Lots of districts are somewhere in the middle with enough
growth to fit the average growth curve.
In the lower piedmont... Union down to McCormick, there are some high population
growth areas and some low population growth areas. Thus putting the squeeze on
counties that met the average and would normally keep their same district
lines.
To the folks in the squeeze it means that the county could literally get split
in half. This is not an option to most folks and for others it means
walking into enemy territory politically.
In Union they are short... thus parts of Laurens and Newberry will get moved,
this flows down into Saluda, or the place which makes more sense Chapin.
Edgefield, McCormick and Greenwood in Anne Parks Dist have fallen short so
they may infringe on Saluda county, or go into Aiken county and move some from
Aiken into Lexington county.
If you are able to attend the public hearings please do so or call your
representative or governor. The Senate districts are equally
confusing. The information and maps will be at the public meeting.
I'll try to get some preliminary information and keep this page updated with the
latest information.
